Jays destroy Yankees who drop 1.5 behind Red Sox
Jays crashed the former leaders 16-7 last night at the Rogers Center where the Yankees failed to near the leading position, dropping 1.5 behind Boston. Toronto scored their first nine points in a row, eight of which within the first term, powering through to their 20th home win of the season.
Thames and Bautista scored the first couple of points for the hosts after Hill singled to center, while the same Hill and Encarnacion followed them minutes later. Furthermore, Toronto grabbed even a five-point lead thanks to Snider who gave his side a consistent lead after Davis reached on infield single to pitcher. Arencibia and Davis made it 7-0 but after Thames hit a ground rule double to center, while Escobar ended the early session with a eighth point. the second inning saw the same Jays extend their lead to nine and draw a clear win on the Rogers.
Yankees’ could only provide a seven-point run set in the third and sixth terms and go two points within Toronto’s advantage. Jones resuscitated his side with a 397-foot homer, while Gardner and Jeter made it 3-9 after Granderson tripled to right. Teixeira then grounded out to shortstop, allowing Granderson to cut the deficit to five points. Finally, Jones, who hit a 422 footer, Swisher and Martin made it 4-9 on the sixth inning.
Jays broke back immediately through Escobar and McDonald who put the home side into a four-point advantage they would preserve until the end of the clash. The seventh round found Jays setting a 13-7 comfortable gap, while the eighth one brought them three more precious points through Lind, Encarnacion and Snider.
New York have conceded their 17th loss on the road this season, going second in the East with a .596 percentage which includes 53 wins and 36 defeats, the bad result to Toronto being their fifth in the past ten games. As for Jays, they remains second from the bottom within the same Conference with a .495 record, including 36 wins and 53 losses. Said Joe Girardi, Yanks’ manager: “I really don’t know what to make of this start because he could have been out of the first inning without giving up a run and only faced four hitters… It was not a good game on our part. Offensively we swung the bats good. Defensively and pitching, we did not necessarily play that well.” The two sides meet again on Friday at the same Rogers Center.
Colorado Rockies 12 – 3 Milwaukee Brewers
Milwaukee have dropped .5 behind new leaders Cardinals after being beaten by the Rockies last night at the Coors Field where the hosts led Colorado twice. Braun opened the score for Brewers after Fielder doubled to left. Colorado broke back immediately through Spilborghs who fired a 383 footer to level the score in the same first inning. Betancourt brought the second and last lead for the Brewers who were about to be stunned by a 12-point run. Wigginton leveled the situation in the second inning after Jimenez singled to center.
The third round went scoreless for both sides, while the fourth one saw the Rockies extend their lead to  four points. Iannetta singled to right center and Stewart made it 3-2. The same Iannetta then doubled the lead following Spilborghs’s single, while Ellis singled to center for Spilborgs’s first point. the term ended with Ellis’s sixth point as Brewers were still struggling for a comeback.
Unfortunately, the visitors were unable to get any closer from then on as Colorado powered through to a much more consistent gap, leaving their opponents nine points adrift in the seventh term. Finally, they last scored a point in the eighth round through Wigginton who made it 12-2. Colorado then allowed the former leaders score a third consolation point in the ninth. Hart homered a 392 footer, but still, the defeat remains one of the biggest this season.
Rockies remain third in the West Conference with a .478 record which features 44 wins and 48 losses, the victory over Brewers being their fourth in the past ten games. On the other side, Milwaukee went second in the Central with a .527 still positive percentage, including 49 victories and 44 defeats, the loss to Rockies being their fifth in the past ten games and 30th on the road.
Baltimore Orioles 4 – 8 Cleveland Indians
Indians remain in cards for the leading position which they are still sharing with Detroit. Cleveland beat Baltimore last night at the Orioles Park at Camden Yards where the visitors gave the bottom side no chance to break through. Cabrera opened the game with a 367-foot homerun, while Santana imitated him immediately with a 407 footer. Hafner made it 3-0 in the same opening term as Indians were drawing an early victory.
The second round went dry for both teams, while the third one saw Orioles provide the first reply through Davis and Tatum who cut the deficit to two points following Markakis’s single. The next two innings also went scoreless as Indians were preparing for a four-point midway session. Buck sacrificed to right in the sixth term, permitting Sizemore to make it 5-2.
Brantley then singled to center, while Cabrera put his side four points ahead. Things got much worse for the Orioles when La Porta and Brantley gave the Indians a 8-2 advantage. Baltimore managed to score a couple of more points in the same term through Wieters and Lee, but the away side made sure they won’t concede any point until the end. The leaders did manage to do so as Cleveland stay in touch with the top spot in the Central.
They have gone .533 this season, the same as Tigers, including 48 wins and 42 defeats. The win over Baltimore was also their fifth in the past ten games and 21st on the road where they remain negative though. Orioles lie foot of the table with a poor .404 record which features 36 wins and 53 losses, yesterday’s defeat being their eighth in a row and 23rd at home.
