Grizzly bear
Word spread like wildfire that a grizzly inflicted a fatal blow making the first animal attack victim in the last 25 years. Yet few tourist felt the need to forget about their vacation and leave.
Instead of leaving, thousands of people showed up after the bear attack on the 57 year old man from California.
Officials stated that the female bear ad cubs and she reacted only to defend her young of a possible threat. Therefore the female was left to roam free in the wilderness, considering that it has never attacked before.
A tourist from California stated that Yellowstone is “bear country”. The park officials denied the hunt for the bear since it was simply acting on instinct.
Cars passing through Yellowstone reported hundreds of wildlife sightings. In one case, there was a 20 minute delay since most motorists stopped and looked at two back bear cubs that were playing around in the grass as their mother was watching over them from a field.
By Thursday night, every tourist in Yellowstone seemed to have knowledge of the attack. At the reception of each hotel, clerks kept telling people that there was a bear attack. Some tourists got worried about their relatives that were hiking in the woods and contacted them. Other tourists were surprised when they found out they had interdiction to visit one of the most popular locations in the park: Artist Point.
One of the tourists that were more disturbed about the news said that she supposed they’d say anything about the area being closed.
The bear attack only highlighted some of the potential threats one might encounter when entering Yellowstone Park. It couldn’t be all about Old Faithful could it?
Each time an animal attack occurs, park rangers have the difficult task of deciding whether the attack is caused by animal aggression, or a defensive reaction to a certain element.
When the accident happened, Brian and Marylyn Matayoshi from California were crossing a meadow, traveling on a back route. They spotted the grizzly foraging for berries less than 100 yards away, so they stopped and started to walk away slowly, unfortunately the female bear became aware of their presence and attacked. The bear charged Mr. Matayoshi first and then shifted its focus on his wife. She managed to get away from the bear and hid under a tree while dialing 911. Despite the fact that she didn’t get a signal, the lucky part was that there were more hikers on that route that heard her and contacted the officials.
Decades spent on research say that grizzly bears, rarely attack humans and on these occasions they do it in self defence. Yet still, does that make them any less dangerous?
