Wimbledon: Venus Struggles Past Old Krumm
Venus edges Krumm to progress
World number 30 Venus Williams had some hard times against the 40-year-old Kimiko Date Krumm of Japan whom the American ousted in three tight sets, 6-7, 6-3, 8-6. Next up for the five-time winner is Maria Jose Martinez who stunned Monica Niculescu of Romania in straight sets.
The opener saw the two players exchange six breaks, three apiece, though Krumm led her opponent 3-0 at one point. Venus’s strong comeback helped her to stay in touch with the first lead, pushing the first set into a breaker. Even more than that, she managed to come from 2-4 down in the tie-break, but she eventually failed to take the first lead, conceding the term at six. As for the second round, it saw Williams cutting the deficit and breaking the Japanese twice in the third and ninth games to make it 1-1 in just over half an hour.
Finally, the decider brought Venus a 2-0 lead she failed to convert into an easy win, being leveled immediately by a stubborn Krumm who showed no inhibition in front of the former world number one throughout the entire meeting. The two then went head to head until the 13th game when things would eventually look clear.
Venus served for a 7-6 lead which she eventually grabbed as while Krumm was hoping to even the situation again and thus stay in the match. Unfortunately, the oldest player of the tournament failed to hold her service, allowing Williams to clinch the victory and make the progress after nearly three hours.
Said Venus: “She came out and I couldn’t seem to get a game. She plays so well, every ball hits the line. She was so aggressive. Coming so close to winning the first set was so frustrating. I give her a lot of credit and I’m just glad to come through.” Winner of the 2001-2002, 2005, 2007 and 2008 editions, Williams will next meet Jose Martinez who crashed Monica Niculescu 6-3, 6-0.
Winner of the Stuttgart event, Julia Gorges eased through the second term after defeating Anabel Medina of Spain in two sets, 6-3, 6-0 to face Mathilde Johansson in the next round. The French overcame Heather Watson after surviving an early scare, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4, but will start the next clash as second favorite. Top seed Caroline Wozniacki is to meet Virginie Razzano in the next round after the Dane eased past Arantxa Parra 6-2, 6-1 in the opening day. Her next opponent edged Sani Mirza of India 7-6, 2-6, 6-3 and will meet Wozniacki for the first time this season.
Former world number one Ana Ivanovic has also made an easy progress after the Serb ousted Melanie Oudin 6-0, 6-1 in the first term to face Eleni Daniilidou of Greece in the second. The Greek eliminated Coco Vandeweghe 6-4, 6-4 and will start the next phase as second favorite. French Open champion Li Na crashed Alla Kudryavtseva 6-3, 6-3 to play Sabine Lisicki of Germany. Lisicki, who won the Birmingham event earlier this month, upset Anastasija Sevastova 6-1, 6-1.
On the same second half of the table, second seed Vera Zvonareva overcame Alison Riske of United States 6-0, 3-6, 6-3 to meet compatriot Elena Vesnina who got rid of Laura Pous 6-4, 6-3 in the opening day. Fortunate Victoria Azarenka, who is fourth favorite at Wimbledon, has made an easy progress after her first opponent Magdalena Rybarikova was forced to pull over due to medical problems at 4-6, 2-3 down.
Petra Kvitova has set a Anne Keothavoing meeting after ousting Alexa Glatch of United States 6-2, 6-2. Her next opponent eliminated Naomi Broady 6-2, 6-4, but will start the next term as second favorite. Winner of Pattaya City Daniela Hntuchova is to confront Marina Erakovic of New Zealand after the Slovak overcame Vitalia Diatchenko 4-6, 7-6, 6-3 in the first round. Erakovic eased past Taipei’s Kai Chen Chang.
Serena Williams, who has recovered from a foot injury, is to face Romania’s Simona Halep in the second term. The Aemrican ousted Aravane Rezai 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 in the first day, while the Romanian eased past Bojana Jovanovski 6-1, 6-2.
