Kathi kantha Rao Story
After a long time comes an entertaining film from EVV’s stable. It lacks the punch in dialogues that are a hallmark of Allari Naresh’s movies but nevertheless ends up being a real cornball. Kathi Kantha Rao carries the burden of handling the entire family issues on his frail shoulders, but his razor sharp brain and the crony alongside him make the job easy.
The first half of the story is slightly boring seemingly dull like a regular sentimental drama with some gags here and there but it is only after interval does the tempo pick up. The content comes to life when Ahuti Prasad and Kota Srinivasa Rao’s election mania sets in, they breathe in fire and pull along the story on it’s well oiled wheels. Kota distributing brinjals as return gifts is mighty crackling.
Sometimes the humour borders on being vulgar, but the smart script races ahead so smoothly that you don’t realize when it ends. The beautiful Rajahmundry comes alive with the whacky lines from Kota, Kondavalasa, Dhanraj, Nalla Seenu, Srinivas Reddy, Krishna Bhagawan and Company and the comedians hold Naresh’s hand in pulling of a nice, silly concoction of a village cum city drama.
The suspense on Ratnam and Kantha Rao’s relationship floats and at times even raise eyebrows giving us a feeling that EVV has made live-in relationships a common thing. The comic timing of the ensemble cast is delightfully sinewy. Naresh freaks out on the story as usual and has shown a considerable improvement in his dances, in this film his monologues are less, his father judiciously distributes focus on each of the cast and that is what makes the story interesting. The pace covers whatever little flaws that are visible. Kamna Jethmalani does a fine job and makes a perfect pair with Allari Naresh.
Kathi Kantha Rao is not a complete no-brainer, it does have a clear storyline, shifts focus from constables to romance and then moves to a village, concentrates on the simpletons and village politics. The director shows the lives of constables, how they fleece love birds in the park to other small loose morals. The best scene is of Ahuti Prasad rolling on the floor and laughing his guts out, enjoying every sadistic moment of his rival’s plan going for a toss. Going by the riotous response of the audiences, it looks like logicless and time pass, fun films have become eminently fashionable and are in huge demand.
