Indonesia Is Not Ready for Democracy

"Landep News"
The Indonesian Interior Minister Gamawan Fauzi says that most of Indonesian is not yet ready for democracy. This can be seen by the number of election disputes currently being tried at the Constitutional Court.
“There were 244 regional head direct election throughout 2010. 191 of them are currently being tried in court” Gamawan say in Padang Tuesday (14/12/10).
Gamawan Fauzi used to be West Sumatera Governor
The Minister was in Padang, West Sumatera as the main speaker in an international seminar held jointly by three state universities in Padang in collaboration with Deakin University Australia.
According to him, much of election cases on trial is a proof of immaturity of Indonesian when it comes to democracy.
“Elections in many regions, ended up in conflict, if their preferred candidate is defeated, the people then marched on to the street while they should have discussed it instead,” he said.
The subsequent demonstration that usually took place, said the Minister, as well as ended up in conflict and damaging a number of public facilities.
“Offices were destroyed, cars burned and many other anarchist action took place when its candidate lost the election, it does not need to happen,” said Gamawan.
He said his ministry is now inventorying the assets that were destroyed and damaged after these post-elections.
“We’re record how many buildings were destroyed, cars burned after the elections in different parts of Indonesia,” said Gamawan.
He added that people are often misdirected in conveying their aspirations.
“There are already authorities for each area. There is governor for each province, mayor for each regency and so on. So everyone already has their part” said the Minister.
With regard to that, Gamawan also ask the public to be more mature and learn how democracy works and willing to accept what has been decided together.
“Neither the government nor the people, we all need to learn democracy,” he said.
